Visitor Record

Already in Canada and want to stay longer? Whether you're nearing your 6-month limit or entered knowing you'd like an extended stay, you may need to apply for a Visitor Record to remain in Canada legally beyond your initial period.

What is a Visitor Record?

A Visitor Record is an application used to prolong your stay as a visitor in Canada. It is required if you are approaching the 6-month limit, or if you already know upon entry that you want to stay longer than 6 months. This is a separate document that is not placed in your passport. The minimum processing time is 204 days.

Who qualifies?

You may qualify if you are in Canada and want to:

  • Extend your stay in Canada as:

    • a visitor

    • a worker authorized to work without a work permit

    • a student authorized to study without a study permit

  • Change your temporary resident category from:

    • a study permit holder to a visitor

    • a work permit holder to a visitor

Note: this application must be submitted before your initial visitor status expires.
