Study Permit
If you're an international student pursuing a program longer than 6 months, you'll likely need a Study Permit. This document allows foreign nationals to study at designated learning institutions (DLIs) across Canada.
What is a Study Permit?
A Study Permit authorizes international students to study in Canada for longer than 6 months at approved institutions known as Designated Learning Institutions (DLIs). Processing times and fees vary by country and type of application. For example, a submission from outside Canada can take approximately 4–12 weeks, while an application from within Canada (initial or extension) can take up to 189 days.
Who qualifies?
You may be eligible for a study permit if you:
-
Are enrolled at a DLI in Canada
-
Can financially support your tuition, living costs, and return transportation
-
Intend to leave Canada once your studies are complete
-
Meet health and admissibility requirements
Note: minors may require additional documentation such as a custodian declaration.
